Sweet Chestnut
Sweet Chestnut is a local timber for local projects giving an improved carbon footprint to contracts. This indigenous species is generally straight grained, hard wearing, durable and naturally stable making it an extremely popular choice for cladding.
We can supply chestnut in solid timber or finger jointed which are produced by mechanically bonding a number of shorter lengths together in a high pressure press using moisture resistant glue. This process ensures a better and more consistent quality board as well as reducing sawmill waste which is beneficial to the environment.
Beaumont can supply Chestnut in a variety of profiles and lengths, please contact your local branch for details.
- Wood Type – Hardwood.
- Environmental – Sourced from well managed forests, either FSC or PEFC certified
- Source – Grows widely across Britain and the rest of Europe.
- Colour – Golden brown, occasional dark brown mineral streaks and will “silver” if left unprotected.
- Moisture Movement – Small.
- Drying - The timber is rather difficult to dry, retaining its moisture in patches, and tending to collapse and honeycomb; this form of defect does not respond well to reconditioning treatments.
- Working Qualities – Excellent, easy to cut and nail and can accept stains, paints and oils well.
- Strength – Although resembling oak in appearance, chestnut is less hard and tough, and some 20 per cent inferior in all its strength properties to that timber.
- Durability – The heartwood is durable.
- Density - It weighs about 560 kg/m³ when dried.
- Fixing – Chestnut has a somewhat acidic character which tends to accelerate the corrosion of metals, particularly when moist. It also contains tannins so stainless screws are recommended.
