Busting the Myths About Chipboard Flooring

Friday, July 27, 2018

Despite being the most widely-used option for wooden floors, chipboard can sometimes get a bad rap, and is thought of as the cheap and low-quality option - which isn’t the case. Chipboard flooring is a great option for a variety of situations and is available in high quality and at varying price ranges - so we thought we'd set the record straight.

Does chipboard flooring soak up water?

Although some cheaper grades of chipboard soak up water like a sponge, the chipboard we sell for flooring is P5 and moisture resistant, meaning it won’t absorb water easily. This makes it ideal for many situations, as plenty of rooms have low humidity levels, such as living rooms and bed rooms.

We’d therefore recommend choosing chipboard floorboards for all rooms other than bathrooms, where naturally the humidity levels will be higher than in the rest of the house. The only other situations where we wouldn’t recommend it are if the areas at risk of flooding or pipe leaks.

Busting the Myths About Chipboard Flooring

Does chipboard flooring need replacing frequently?

The idea that chipboard is flimsy and needs replacing ever few years is not true. If kept relatively dry and cared for, chipboard can last for a couple of decades before it needs replacing, although this can be more or less depending on the situation. This durability, along with the low-cost makes chipboard a very practical choice.

It is cheap to buy?

Chipboard is the cheaper alternative to plywood, so is a great option if you want to keep the costs of your project as low as possible. Different grades of it are available however, meaning the price can vary depending on which option you choose.

At Beaumont Forest we offer two chipboard options at P5 grade: a basic option as well as one with a protective film that offers up to 42 days of weather resistance. Both options are load bearing, moisture resistant, and available in different thicknesses to suit your needs.
